This scholarship is in honor of Ms. Alice S. M. Cheng-Jones who died of cancer in June 2011. She was an adjunct Accounting instructor in the Business and Economics Department at Laney College. This is an $800 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Laney College Business student graduating with an AA this Spring with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and transferring as a junior to a 4-year college or university, entering into a Bachelor Degree program majoring in Accounting (Applicant must provide acceptance letter).

Ms. Rita was an advocate for women and a staunch supporter of education and teachers. She believed education was the key to everything! Ms. Rita was very involved with the Child Development Department during her daughter's, Dr. Stacy Thompson, tenure as Department Chair at Merritt College.  She was 95 when she passed away in 2019. She will always be remembered.

This scholarship is awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. The amount will vary from year to year. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Child Development who is graduating or otherwise terminating the program at Merritt College.

Provide support for two promising students within the Culinary Arts Baking and Pastry Department who are pursuing a career in the culinary arts, with a preference for those interested in professional baking. In addition, membership in Bakers Dozen SF is included. Students will be awarded $950 each.

This scholarship was created to promote and encourage academic and professional development of all students at College of Alameda. This is a $1,000 scholarship award.

This scholarship is to honor Concetta Branson who grew up working class and was the first person in her family to graduate from high school. She was committed to helping the disadvantaged through her work as a public health nurse and lactation consultant. Her wish was to support those college students who had minimal educational support at home. Two $500.00 awards will be given out in the Spring.

This is a $1000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to two recipients. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to outstanding Laney College Labor Studies students.

The Donald Hongisto Leadership Award honors Don's life-long commitment to the students of the Peralta Colleges. He started his career as an English teacher, later serving as dean of the department and as the President of three Peralta Colleges (Feather River College, College of Alameda, and Merritt College). He believes strongly in the power of education, especially the humanities, and is passionate about leadership. This award is to recognize students developing their leadership potential while studying at one or more of the Peralta campuses.

This scholarship is in memory of Dr. George Herring an Oakland educator with more than 33 years of administrative experience at the community college level. This scholarship will award individuals seeking and/or going into the field of higher education, whom have interest in a career as a teacher or administrator and have engaged at some level in community service.

As an educator, Dr. Strong wants to help low-income students without other scholarships funding who sincerely pursue their college degree to seek a decent employment opportunity and to improve their quality their quality of life. This scholarship is intended for a member of the COA Cougar Basketball Team. In addition to academics, students are to be evaluated on athletic participation, attendance to practice, and team leadership.​

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide books and educational supplies for a currently enrolled Peralta District college student. Preference is given to students with a STEM major and/or interest in a public education career. Each spring a $500 minimum award will be granted. Award amounts may vary each year.

Alameda Power & Telecom and the College of Alameda share related goals to sustainability, energy, energy-efficiency, workforce development, community development, curriculum development, and public relations. 

With funds from Alameda Power & Telecom this $350 scholarship is intended for a student who has completed or is currently taking an Environmental Management Technology course.

Eva Ramirez was a former co-chair of the English for a Second Language Department at Laney College. The fund was established to provide scholarships for ESL students. One to two students will be awarded $500.

This is a $2,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. Ms. Wallenstein began teaching at Merritt College (then called Oakland City College) in 1960, where she was a dynamic instructor of American Government, Comparative Government, and the French language until her retirement in 1988. She returned to Merritt College to teach classes in Political Science on a limited basis until 2002. Also, during her retirement, she served as a member of several faculty committees and led the in-service training for new faculty hires at Merritt College. Later, unable to maintain her teaching duties or committee work because of illness, Ms. Wallenstein assisted students in the Learning/Tutorial Center until 2006. Truly dedicated to her vocation as a teacher, Eve St. Martin Wallenstein was a mentor to her students and her colleagues in academia, as well as a loyal friend.

Named in memory of Georgia Runge-Smith, a graduate of the California Community College system, this scholarship is a tribute to her commitment to youth and education.

This is a $250 scholarship offered in the Spring. This scholarship is open to all students at the Peralta Colleges(Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College) regardless of program or major. Qualified students need to have a 2.5 GPA or greater, demonstrate financial need, and must have a goal of transferring to a four-year institution for further study.

Hayim Najjar immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 from Jerusalem; he prided himself on his American children's educational achievements. This scholarship is intended for a continuing Berkeley City College student who has at least one remaining semester at BCC. Preference will be given to those from a low socio-economic background as well as to those who volunteer and/or work in the community. Ten students will be awarded $500 each in the spring.

This scholarship was established by the Peralta Colleges Alumni Association to honor Henry Fort's longtime contributions and dedication to the students of the Peralta Community College District. This award for $250 enables students with financial need to purchase textbooks.

This scholarship was established to honor a beloved brother Hoc N. Hua, a Merritt College alumnus, who passed away in a tragic incident. Hoc was a smart, dynamic, fun-loving, adventurous, and outgoing person. A $500 scholarship will be awarded in the spring.

This is a $500 scholarship. Applicants must be an F1 International student with at least one semester remaining at Peralta. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, and must be in good academic standing. Applicants must attach a completed student education plan (SEP) showing their intent to earn an associates degree, complete a certificate program or transfer to a 4-yr university. Applicants must submit at least one letter of recommendation from a Peralta faculty person. (Not from the International office). Must have at least one remaining semester at Peralta.

This fund is intended to honor the memory of Laney College Student Isaac Jamal White. Isaac was a b2b Learning Community student at Laney. A former foster youth, Isaac was driven to complete his education at Laney College and challenge the expectations dominant society assumed for him. He was tragically murdered on January 24, 2012. Although his dreams remain unfulfilled, his legacy to inspire mentors and others like him live on to achieve their educational and life goals. This scholarship is a needs-based scholarship. Award amount will vary.

This scholarship is in honor of Peggy Withrow who was an instructor at College of Alameda. Peggy was an active Girl Scout Leader; Sunday School Teacher; Alameda County Aquatics; Little League Baseball; youth soccer; political action coordinator for the local area California Schools Employees Association; CASCWA; Family Services; AAUW; League of Women Voters; community representative to the SARB; fan and season ticket holder for the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics; confidant and senior advisor to a City Councilman, a Mayor and a Trustee member of the governing board of The Peralta Colleges.

Dr. Martena "Smokey" Wilson was a pioneer in basic skills curriculum development and dedicated thirty-six years of her life to teaching at Laney College in the English Department, Project Bridge and Deaf Can. This is a $500 scholarship awarded in the Spring to a Laney College student. Special consideration will be given to educationally motivated students as demonstrated by their progress despite financial or personal challenges.

This scholarship is awarded to multiple Berkeley City College Multimedia Students who serve the multimedia community and support the success of their fellow students.

Priority will be given to:

• Multimedia Teaching Assistants (paid or volunteer.)
• Students who encourage student success amongst their peers (via coaching, mentoring, creating communication networks or supporting the completion of fellow student’s projects or transfer degrees.)
• First generation college students and those who demonstrate financial need (earn a low-income, but not necessarily receive financial aid.)

The Emerging Filmmaker prize is designed to provide seed money to enable students to complete creatively outstanding projects. This scholarship will be awarded to multiple Multimedia Arts students.

Priority will be given to:

• Filmmakers who are under-represented in the broader film community
• Projects that have a clearly defined intention and path to completion/distribution
• Short-format projects (under 5 minutes) that are narrow and deep in scope

**Very important note**

Applicant must submit up to three (3) minutes of sample footage – please provide an online link to footage, with a password for jurors to access. Footage may be in any stage of edit (final or rough edit, or raw footage) but should include best examples of work.​

Applicant must submit a one (1) page artist's statement that includes: 

1) Project Summary, including a Logline. 

2) Intended Timeline, Schedule of Completion and Distribution Plan.

3) How funding will contribute to the completion of the project (ie: feed crew, reimburse out of pocket expenses, entrance fees for festivals, time off work to edit project).

The scholarship is intended for students who are part of the DSPS/SAS, EOPS, CARE, or CalWORKs Program who are demonstrating persistence in rising above oppression and hardships such as racial injustice, racial profiling, misogyny/sexism, poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, hate crimes, structural violence, homophobia/transphobia, and/or disability access challenges. Awards range from $100 - $300.

This is a scholarship funded by the AAUW of Alameda in Memory of Patti Heimburger.
This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a second year or later student whose home campus is the College of Alameda. The student should have completed at least 24 units with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Priority will be given to Alameda residents. Scholarship winners are also offered free membership in AAUW. Five students will be awarded $1,000 each.

This is a scholarship funded by the AAUW of Alameda in Memory of Patti Heimburger.

This is a $1,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to one student from each of the four Peralta Community Colleges. In addition, one of the four President's Medallion recipients will be selected as the Chancellor's Trophy Award recipient and will receive an additional $1500 award and their name on the Chancellor's Trophy that will be presented to the student at graduation. Applicants must apply at the College where the majority (51% or more) of his/her coursework has been completed at the time of application, and the majority (51% or more) of his/her activities (e.g., citizenship, leadership service, employment) have occurred. Employment during this period is given proper consideration. The recipient will be asked to provide a headshot photo and a short statement that will appear on the foundation's website.

To honor the legacy of Rene Edgar Rivas, who dedicated thirty-six years of pride, knowledge, and servitude at Peralta Colleges by ensuring student's needs were met. During his tenure, Rene worked collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the District. In November 2022, the Laney College Classified Senate renamed the Senate Lounge to Rivas Classified Lounge. The Rene Rivas Classified Senate Scholarship is a lasting tribute to his memory and a special THANK YOU to all the students he helped during their educational journey on and off campus. The scholarship will award 2 (two) Peralta students $500 each toward books, tuition, and necessities during their academic journey. The scholarship may be awarded to the student one time only.

This is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year. Richard Lewis McHugh was a Navy veteran from the Vietnam War time frame. He served on the USS Hornet and performed avionics maintenance on helicopters and airplanes. Rick was later stationed in Japan and then returned to the San Francisco Bay Area (where he grew up) after four years in the Navy and lived in San Francisco during the height of the Haight-Ashbury days. After a devastating house fire that nearly took his life, he spent the later years living with the effects of the fire. Unfortunately, Rick contracted Hepatitis C, which eventually led to liver failure and claimed his life. Before becoming too ill to attend classes, Rick took several creative writing and art classes at the College of Alameda which gave him hope and encouragement. The Richard Lewis McHugh Memorial Scholarship Award is a special way his memory can live on while helping others.

This scholarship fund is used to award scholarships to economically disadvantaged students of the Peralta Community College District. A total of four scholarships at $500 each will be awarded to one qualified student from each Peralta College (College of Alameda, Berkeley City College, Laney College and Merritt College).

1) Completed a Minimum of 30 Semester Units of College Level Classes
2) Cumulative GPA >= 2.0
3) California College Promise Grant (formerly known as BOG Waiver) recipient 

The scholarship honors the memory of a long-time member of the Chemistry Department Faculty who mentored countless students who went on to study science at a 4-year university. The successful applicant will have demonstrated an above-average aptitude for the study of chemistry and will have completed or be currently enrolled in the organic chemistry sequence (CHEM 12A and 12B) at Laney College with distinction and plans to transfer to a 4-year college or university.

Eligibility Requirements:
1) Currently enrolled in CHEM 12A and/or 12B or completed these two Laney College classes with distinction
2) Transferring to a 4-year college or university

Additional consideration will be given to applicants who have engaged in laboratory research as an undergraduate and/or express interest in pursuing a degree in chemistry.

This fund is intended to honor the memory of Susan Almon Duncan former Peralta Trustee for 18 years. This fund is intended for the use of distributing $500 book scholarship awards in the spring to a single student.

This scholarship is intended to help people in our community achieve the culinary goals in honor of Bridget Berrigan.

The Arizmendi Bakery on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, CA is part of a broader Association of Cooperatives, founded in 1996. The Association develops democratically run businesses whose worker-owners are in control of their own livelihood. Arizmendi Lakeshore is committed to our Oakland community and wants to invest in the future culinary talent. Their membership will offer this $3,000 scholarship for the entire program to a Laney College Culinary Arts Program student who is dedicated to the culinary arts and Oakland.

For the full-time student (12 credits/units or more) the awarded scholarship would be a maximum of $750 per semester up to but no more than four semesters. For a part-time student the scholarship award amount is $375. Automatic renewal is contingent upon the student maintaining a GPA of 2.5.

I have had the privilege of my undergraduate college paid for by parents who are war refugees. They have given time and money to charity which has inspired me to do similar work.

This scholarship award is intended for a continuing College of Alameda student who has at least one remaining semester at COA. Preference will be given to those from a low Socio-Economic background as well as to those who volunteer and/or work in the community. Three students will be awarded $800.00 in the spring.
