    This scholarship is in honor of Ms. Alice S. M. Cheng-Jones who died of cancer in June 2011. She was an adjunct Accounting instructor in the Business and Economics Department at Laney College. This is an $800 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Laney College Business student graduating with an AA this Spring with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and transferring as a junior to a 4-year college or university, entering into a Bachelor Degree program majoring in Accounting (Applicant must provide acceptance letter).

Ms. Rita was very involved with the Child Development Department during her daughter's, Dr. Stacy Thompson, tenure as Department Chair at Merritt College.  She was 95 when she passed away in 2019. She will always be remembered.

    This scholarship is to honor Concetta Branson who grew up working class and was the first person in her family to graduate from high school. She was committed to helping the disadvantaged through her work as a public health nurse and lactation consultant. Her wish was to support those college students who had minimal educational support at home. Two $500.00 awards will be given out in the Spring.

    The Donald Hongisto Leadership Award honors Don's life-long commitment to the students of the Peralta Colleges. He started his career as an English teacher, later serving as dean of the department and as the President of three Peralta Colleges (Feather River College, College of Alameda, and Merritt College). He believes strongly in the power of education, especially the humanities, and is passionate about leadership. This award is to recognize students developing their leadership potential while studying at one or more of the Peralta campuses.

    The scholarship honors Ernestine Camp, a Black woman mathematics instructor who taught at Laney College for over 30 years. This scholarship is for students who plan to enter a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics).

    This is a $2,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. Ms. Wallenstein began teaching at Merritt College (then called Oakland City College) in 1960, where she was a dynamic instructor of American Government, Comparative Government, and the French language until her retirement in 1988. She returned to Merritt College to teach classes in Political Science on a limited basis until 2002. Also, during her retirement, she served as a member of several faculty committees and led the in-service training for new faculty hires at Merritt College. Later, unable to maintain her teaching duties or committee work because of illness, Ms. Wallenstein assisted students in the Learning/Tutorial Center until 2006. Truly dedicated to her vocation as a teacher, Eve St. Martin Wallenstein was a mentor to her students and her colleagues in academia, as well as a loyal friend.

    This is a $250 scholarship offered in the Spring. This scholarship is open to all students at the Peralta Colleges(Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College) regardless of program or major. Qualified students need to have a 2.5 GPA or greater, demonstrate financial need, and must have a goal of transferring to a four-year institution for further study.

Preference will be given to those from a low socio-economic background as well as to those who volunteer and/or work in the community. Ten students will be awarded $500 each in the spring.

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year. Richard Lewis McHugh was a Navy veteran from the Vietnam War time frame. He served on the USS Hornet and performed avionics maintenance on helicopters and airplanes. Rick was later stationed in Japan and then returned to the San Francisco Bay Area (where he grew up) after four years in the Navy and lived in San Francisco during the height of the Haight-Ashbury days. After a devastating house fire that nearly took his life, he spent the later years living with the effects of the fire. Unfortunately, Rick contracted Hepatitis C, which eventually led to liver failure and claimed his life. Before becoming too ill to attend classes, Rick took several creative writing and art classes at the College of Alameda which gave him hope and encouragement. The Richard Lewis McHugh Memorial Scholarship Award is a special way his memory can live on while helping others.

    Sachiko Umehara Scholarship Fund

    To honor Sachiko for her support and promotion of the Aesthetic Pruners Association (APA). Sachiko was a student in the Landscape Horticulture Program at Merritt College in Oakland, CA. Many of the Aesthetic Pruners Association members received their horticultural education at Merritt, and through its special pruning classes, learned how to artfully prune Sachiko’s beloved maples. Sachiko knew that members of the APA would keep her maples healthy and beautiful after they left the care of her nursery. She was an advocate of aesthetic pruning and knew the value of the education a person could get from the Landscape Horticulture program and aesthetic pruning classes at Merritt College. This is a $500.00 scholarship.

    The scholarship honors the memory of a long-time member of the Chemistry Department Faculty who mentored countless students who went on to study science at a 4-year university. The successful applicant will have demonstrated an above-average aptitude for the study of chemistry and will have completed or be currently enrolled in the organic chemistry sequence (CHEM 12A and 12B) at Laney College with distinction and plans to transfer to a 4-year college or university.

    The Berrigan Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to help people in our community achieve the culinary goals in honor of Bridget Berrigan.

    The Arizmendi Bakery on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, CA is part of a broader Association of Cooperatives, founded in 1996. The Association develops democratically run businesses whose worker-owners are in control of their own livelihood. Arizmendi Lakeshore is committed to our Oakland community and wants to invest in the future culinary talent. Their membership will offer this $3,000 scholarship for the entire program to a Laney College Culinary Arts Program student who is dedicated to the culinary arts and Oakland.


    For the full-time student (12 credits/units or more) the awarded scholarship would be a maximum of $750 per semester up to but no more than four semesters. For a part-time student the scholarship award amount is $375. Automatic renewal is contingent upon the student maintaining a GPA of 2.5.

    Formerly Incarcerated Student Scholarship: In alignment with the instructor's current work, this scholarship supports formerly incarcerated students pursuing higher education as a means of transforming their lives and contributing to society.
