    AAUW Alameda Branch Scholarship

    This is a scholarship funded by the AAUW of Alameda. 


    Adrianne Warmick Memorial Scholarship

    Adrianne was a tutor at Laney College in the 1990's and using the knowledge she gained, she became quite respected in the IT department at the Department of the Treasury.  Laney College was the first step to improving her life and she left instructions to return the gift the college had given her by establishing this scholarship fund.    


    Alice S. M. Cheng-Jones Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship is in honor of Ms. Alice S. M. Cheng-Jones who died of cancer in June 2011. She was an adjunct Accounting instructor in the Business and Economics Department at Laney College.


    Antoinette Lenahan Child Development Scholarship

    This scholarship is awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. The amount will vary from year to year. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Child Development who is graduating or otherwise terminating the program at Merritt College. 


    Barbara and Jamar Mears Scholarship

    This is a $250 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. Applicants must have a declared major and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. This scholarship is intended to support Black and Latino male students attending College of Alameda. 


    BCC Dreamer's Scholarship

    This scholarship is being awarded by the BCC Dreamers Task Force which is a collaboration across disciplines, service areas and departments of faculty.


    Berkeley City College Umoja Scholar's Academy (BCCUSA) Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended for a BCCUSA student.  


    Bernard Osher Foundation Scholarship - Berkeley City College

    Thanks to the generosity of The Bernard Osher Foundation, thousands of California Community College students, may receive an Osher Scholarship as part of the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment. Mr. Osher’s vision is to “not only benefit the community college students of today but countless more for years to come.”

    Annual Awards vary from year to year and will be pro-rated based on enrollment.

    Bowles Scholars Award

    This scholarship is in honor of Catherine Janes Bowles, M.A., and Judge George Bowles, J.D., and is sponsored by Dr. Gloria Bowles, Ph.D., founding coordinator of the women’s studies program at UC Berkeley, to address in a modest way growing inequality.
     
    This is a $1,000 scholarship award. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to part-time Berkeley City College students who have completed a minimum of 15 units, have a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA, and appear committed to completing their degrees.



    Consortium of Information Systems Executives (CISE)

    This scholarship is awarded once a year in the Spring to recipients from Merritt College. The amount will vary from year to year. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support for students pursuing careers in Information Technology, Computer Science, and Engineering. 


    Dao Mou Tan Scholarship

    This $500 scholarship is to be awarded to one student. Mr. Tan is a business man and a retired professor in China. His passion is to help and motivate the younger generation to achieve their educational goals. The intent of this scholarship is to encourage Chinese students to study at any of the Peralta Community Colleges. Scholarship preference will be given to Chinese applicants who demonstrate financial need.


    Doddie Gifford Labor Studies Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $1000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to two recipients. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to outstanding Laney College Labor Studies students.


    Dr. Nathan Strong Academic Scholarship

    As an educator, Dr. Strong wants to help low-income students without other scholarships funding who sincerely pursue their college degree to seek a decent employment opportunity and to improve their quality their quality of life. 


    Dr. Nathan Strong Scholarship for Cougar Basketball Team

    As an educator, Dr. Strong wants to help low-income students without other scholarships funding who sincerely pursue their college degree to seek a decent employment opportunity and to improve their quality their quality of life. This scholarship is intended for a member of the COA Cougar Basketball Team. In addition to academics, students are to be evaluated on athletic participation, attendance to practice, and team leadership.​


    Environment & Sustainability Scholarship

    Alameda Power & Telecom and the College of Alameda share goals related goals to sustainability, energy, energy-efficiency, workforce development, community development, curriculum development, and public relations. 

    With funds from Alameda Power
    &Telecom this $250 scholarship is intended for a student who has completed or is currently taking an Environmental Management Technology course. To be offered in the Fall and Spring semesters.

     


    Eve St. Martin Wallenstein Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $2,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. Ms. Wallenstein began teaching at Merritt College (then called Oakland City College) in 1960, where she was a dynamic instructor of American Government, Comparative Government, and the French language until her retirement in 1988. She returned to Merritt College to teach classes in Political Science on a limited basis until 2002. Also, during her retirement, she served as a member of several faculty committees and led the in-service training for new faculty hires at Merritt College. Later, unable to maintain her teaching duties or committee work because of illness, Ms. Wallenstein assisted students in the Learning/Tutorial Center until 2006. Truly dedicated to her vocation as a teacher, Eve St. Martin Wallenstein was a mentor to her students and her colleagues in academia, as well as a loyal friend.


    Follett Bookstore Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded to one or more recipients at each Peralta Community College campus. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to applicants who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The applicant's financial need and scholastic record will be taken into consideration. The review committee may choose to focus on particular areas of study or other criteria in deciding awards. 


    Foster Youth Next Step Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended for 1st year, Foster Care and/or Emancipated students. This is a $500 scholarship. Recipient will receive an additional $500 the following semester contingent upon student’s GPA and enrollment status.


    Georgia Runge-Smith Memorial Scholarship

    Named in memory of Georgia Runge-Smith, a graduate of the California Community College system, this scholarship is a tribute to her commitment to youth and education.

    This is a $250 scholarship offered in the Fall and the Spring. This scholarship is open to all students at the Peralta Colleges(Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College) regardless of program or major. Qualified students need to have a 2.5 GPA or greater, demonstrate financial need, and must have a goal of transferring to a four-year institution for further study. 

     


    International Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year, once in the Spring and again in the Fall.


    International Student Book Card Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year, once in the Spring and again in the Fall. This Scholarship is intended for a F1 International Student to purchase book and school supplies. This scholarship will be awarded in Follett Bookstore gift cards.


    Ivan J Houston Scholarship (NAAIA)

    This is a $1,250 scholarship awarded twice a year. The Ivan J. Houston Scholarship is so named in honor of a pioneering African American insurance professional who led the first Black-owned insurance company, Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, in California.


    John & Deborah Tunis Scholarship - BCC

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. ​This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a female student who demonstrates financial need and academic potential in her career and degree in one of four categories; math/science, business/industry, health sciences or vocational education.   


    John & Deborah Tunis Scholarship - COA

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. ​This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a female student who demonstrates financial need and academic potential in her career and degree in one of four categories; math/science, business/industry, health sciences or vocational education.   


    John & Deborah Tunis Scholarship - Laney College

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. ​This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a female student who demonstrates financial need and academic potential in her career and degree in one of four categories; math/science, business/industry, health sciences or vocational education.   


    Landscape Horticulture Scholarship

    The purpose of the scholarship is to provide students with hands on experience in propagation techniques and timing of crops to have them ready for sale when needed. These skills are critical for students interested in working in the Nursery Production Industry.


    Laney Faculty Senate Scholarship

    This spring scholarship grants two awards of $1,000. Multiple awards may be given to qualified Laney College students. Applicants will be evaluated on their scholastic record, and can possibly be interviewed by the scholarship committee.


    Latinos Unidos Scholarship

    Recognize and reward COA students that have demonstrated volunteer time towards hosting activities that promote multi-cultural awareness, community service and being an active COA club member.  Latinos Unidos Student Club would like to see more student involvement among all of the organizations on campus and hope that recognizing and rewarding volunteers in our community will encourage more participation.


    Mardree Scott Scholarship Fund

    Mardree Scott was former Child Development Department Chair at Merritt College. This $500 scholarship is intended for anyone who is passionate about early childhood education and wants to pursue a career working with young children. Anyone is eligible to receive the scholarship who qualifies as selected by the Child Development Department at Merritt College.      


    Margaret Haig Scholarship

    This is a $1,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Fall to a single recipient. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to single mothers. Preference will be given to applicants that are homeless.​


    Martena “Smokey” Wilson Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded in the Spring and Fall to a Laney College student. Special consideration will be given to educationally motivated students as demonstrated by their progress despite financial or personal challenges.


    Multimedia Alumni Service Award

    The Multimedia Alumni Service Award acknowledges Multimedia Department Alumni who support the department in one of the following ways:
    • Guest Lecturing
    • Assist current students in finding jobs
    • Mentoring current Multimedia Students
    • Contribute to Multimedia Arts – Industry Collaborations



    Multimedia Community Service Award

    This scholarship is awarded to multiple Berkeley City College Multimedia Students who serve the multimedia community and support the success of their fellow students.

    Priority will be given to:
    • Multimedia Teaching Assistants (paid or volunteer.)
    • Students who encourage student success amongst their peers (via coaching, mentoring, creating communication networks or supporting the completion of fellow student’s projects or transfer degrees.)
    • First generation college students and those who demonstrate financial need (earn a low-income, but not necessarily receive financial aid.)



    Multimedia Emerging Filmmaker Award

    The Emerging Filmmaker prize is designed to provide seed money to enable students to complete creatively outstanding projects. This scholarship will be awarded to multiple Multimedia Arts students.

    Priority will be given to:
    • Filmmakers who are under-represented in the broader film community
    • Projects that have a clearly defined intention and path to completion/distribution
    • Short-format projects (under 5 minutes) that are narrow and deep in scope
    **Very important note**

    Applicant must submit up to three (3) minutes of sample footage – please provide an online link to footage, with a password for jurors to access. Footage may be in any stage of edit (final or rough edit, or raw footage) but should include best examples of work.​

    Applicant must submit a one (1) page artist's statement that includes: 

    1) Project Summary, including a Logline. 

    2) Intended Timeline, Schedule of Completion and Distribution Plan.

    3) How funding will contribute to the completion of the project (ie: feed crew, reimburse out of pocket expenses, entrance fees for festivals, time off work to edit project).

     4) How is this project special? Why is it important to you and your audience?​

     


    PACLA Scholarship - BCC

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to two students. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Chicano/Latino student enrolled at Berkeley City College. Preference will be given to, but not limited to AB540 Students.


     


    PACLA Scholarship - COA

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to students. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Chicano/Latino student enrolled at College of Alameda. Preference will be given to, but not limited to AB540 Students.


    PACLA Scholarship - Laney College

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to students. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Chicano/Latino student enrolled at Laney College. Preference will be given to, but not limited to AB540 Students.


    PACLA Scholarship - Merritt College

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to students. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Chicano/Latino student enrolled at Merritt College. Preference will be given to, but not limited to AB540 Students.


    Peralta Dreamer's Scholarship

    This is a scholarship to support Dreamer's across the four campuses.


    Peralta Retirees Organization Scholarship - BCC

    This is a $1,500 scholarship awarded once per year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a single recipient from each of the Peralta Community Colleges that has a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Candidate will have a total of 60 units by the end of the current semester, excluding basic skills classes in English and Mathematics and will be attending a four year college or university the following Fall semester. 

    In addition, the student must submit a coherent essay that focuses on:
    *Obstacles the student has overcome in order to acquire an education
    *How their Peralta experience has impacted their life
    *Plans for the future including continuing education plans and career plans.

    President's Medallion Award

    This is a $1,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to one student from each of the four Peralta Community Colleges. In addition, one of the four President's Medallion recipients will be selected as the Chancellor's Trophy Award recipient and will receive an additional $1500 award and their name on the Chancellor's Trophy that will be presented to the student at graduation. Applicants must apply at the College where the majority (51% or more) of his/her coursework has been completed at the time of application, and the majority (51% or more) of his/her activities (e.g., citizenship, leadership service, employment) have occurred. Employment during this period is given proper consideration.


    Richard Lewis McHugh Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year. Richard Lewis McHugh was a Navy veteran from the Vietnam War time frame. He served on the USS Hornet and performed avionics maintenance on helicopters and airplanes. Rick was later stationed in Japan and then returned to the San Francisco Bay Area (where he grew up) after four years in the Navy and lived in San Francisco during the height of the Haight-Ashbury days. After a devastating house fire that nearly took his life, he spent the later years living with the effects of the fire. Unfortunately, Rick contracted Hepatitis C, which eventually led to liver failure and claimed his life. Before becoming too ill to attend classes, Rick took several creative writing and art classes at the College of Alameda which gave him hope and encouragement. The Richard Lewis McHugh Memorial Scholarship Award is a special way his memory can live on while helping others.


    Study Abroad Scholarship

    The Office of International Education at Peralta Community College District is committed to supporting students who wish to study abroad. This $500 scholarship is intended for students in need of financial assistance to study abroad for a life changing experience.


    The 5021 Scholarship

    This a $1,000 scholarship awarded twice a year.


    The Berrigan Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to help people in our community achieve the culinary goals in honor of Bridget Berrigan.

    The Arizmendi Bakery on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, CA is part of a broader Association of Cooperatives, founded in 1996. The Association develops democratically run businesses whose worker-owners are in control of their own livelihood. Arizmendi Lakeshore is committed to our Oakland community and wants to invest in the future culinary talent. Their membership will offer this $3,000 scholarship to a Laney College Culinary Arts Program student who is dedicated to the culinary arts and Oakland.

    The scholarship will be paid in the amount of $750 up to but no more than four semesters. Automatic renewal is contingent upon the student maintaining a GPA of 2.5.

     


    The Oakland Athletics Scholar Program

    The Oakland Athletics Scholar program will provide scholarships for students enrolled in a variety of programs at each of the four (4) Peralta Colleges in perpetuity. Students receiving this scholarship will be eligible for, but not guaranteed an internship within the Oakland Athletics organization.


    Toni Lesperance Scholarship

    This is a $300 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to encourage Bay Area youth to study in the vocational fields.


    Vanson Nguyen Scholarship

    Having college paid by immigrant parents, I am privileged to be able to reach my goals. Now they give time and money to charity and that has inspired me to do similar work; provide and teach those dealt with a less fortunate hand than others.

    This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a continuing College of Alameda student who has at least one remaining semester at COA. Preference will be given to those from a low Socio-Economic background as well as to those who volunteer and/or work in the community.


    Wanda Garcia Memorial Scholarship - Architecture/Engineering

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Laney student majoring in Architecture/Engineering.


    Wanda Garcia Memorial Scholarship - Biology/Life Science

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Laney student majoring in Biology/Life Science.


    Wanda Garcia Memorial Scholarship - International Student

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to an International Student currently enrolled at Laney College (in any major).


    Willa Graves Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to second semester or later Laney College Cosmetology students. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate financial need.
