    Adeline Giuntini Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to be awarded to College of Alameda, Apparel Design and Merchandising (ADAM) program students, This scholarship is awarded once a year in the Spring. The amount will vary from year to year and multiple students will be chosen by COA ADAM faculty and staff.

    Adrianne Warmick Memorial Scholarship

    Adrianne was a tutor at Laney College in the 1990's and using the knowledge she gained, she became quite respected in the IT department at the Department of the Treasury.  Laney College was the first step to improving her life and she left instructions to return the gift the college had given her by establishing this scholarship fund.

    Alice S. M. Cheng-Jones Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship is in honor of Ms. Alice S. M. Cheng-Jones who died of cancer in June 2011. She was an adjunct Accounting instructor in the Business and Economics Department at Laney College. This is a $1,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a Laney College Business student graduating with an AA this Spring with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and transferring as a junior to a 4-year college or university, entering into a Bachelor Degree program majoring in Accounting (Applicant must provide acceptance letter).

    Antoinette Lenahan Child Development Scholarship

    This scholarship is awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. The amount will vary from year to year. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Child Development who is graduating or otherwise terminating the program at Merritt College.

    Barbara and Jamar Mears Scholarship

    This is a $250 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring. Applicants must have a declared major and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher attending College of Alameda. Donor will require recipients to share a picture of themselves upon award notification.

    BCC Dreamer's Scholarship

    This scholarship is being awarded by the BCC Dreamers Task Force which is a collaboration across disciplines, service areas and departments of faculty.

    Bowles Scholars Award

    This scholarship is in honor of Catherine Janes Bowles, M.A., and Judge George Bowles, J.D., and is sponsored by Dr. Gloria Bowles, Ph.D., founding coordinator of the women’s studies program at UC Berkeley, to address in a modest way growing inequality.
     
    This is a $1,000 scholarship award. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to part-time Berkeley City College students who have completed a minimum of 15 units, have a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA, and appear committed to completing their degrees.




    Carter Gilmore Endowed Scholarship

    The Carter Gilmore Scholarship Fund is an endowment from the Gilmore Family Trust in honor of Mr. Carter Gilmore. Carter Gilmore, a longtime community activist and businessman who sought to improve the lives of Bay Area residents, was the first African American elected to the Oakland City Council. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one (1) Merritt College student. The recipient will be selected by the Merritt College Scholarship Committee and approved by the Gilmore Family representatives. 

    Eligibility Requirements:
    The applicant must be an undergraduate student, at least 18 years of age, pursuing educational study in political science and/or public service, with a GPA of at least 2.0



    Consortium of Information Systems Executives (CISE)

    This scholarship is awarded once a year in the Spring to recipients from Merritt College. The amount will vary from year to year. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support for students pursuing careers in Information Technology, Computer Science, and Engineering.

    Diesel Mechanics Tool Scholarship

    This $500 scholarship award was created to help Diesel Mechanic students meet the expenses of tuition and purchase tools needed to successfully complete the Diesel Mechanic Program at College of Alameda.

    Eligibility Criteria:

    2) Enrolled in 10+ units in the Diesel Mechanic Program at College of Alameda
    3) Cumulative GPA >= 3.0
     


    Diversity in Science Education

    This scholarship is intended to promote a more diverse group of students who transfer to a 4-year program with the intention of majoring in chemistry, physics, or biology. Applicant must be majoring in Chemistry, Physics, or Biology, GPA greater than 3.0, completed 24 units/credits, 10 units/credits must be in Chemistry, Biology or Physics and demonstrate a financial need. 


    Doddie Gifford Labor Studies Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $1000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to two recipients. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to outstanding Laney College Labor Studies students.

    Eligibility Requirements:
    1) Campus is Laney College
    2) Majors and Programs is LABST Labor Studies- AA or LABST Labor Studies- CC
     


    Dr. Nathan Strong Academic Scholarship

    As an educator, Dr. Strong wants to help low-income students without other scholarships funding who sincerely pursue their college degree to seek a decent employment opportunity and to improve their quality of life. Preference will be given to a single parent.

    Eligibility Requirements:
    1) Credits/Units Enrolled >= 12.00

    Dr. Nathan Strong Scholarship for Cougar Basketball Team

    As an educator, Dr. Strong wants to help low-income students without other scholarships funding who sincerely pursue their college degree to seek a decent employment opportunity and to improve their quality their quality of life. This scholarship is intended for a member of the COA Cougar Basketball Team. In addition to academics, students are to be evaluated on athletic participation, attendance to practice, and team leadership.​

    Eligibility Requirements:

    Environment & Sustainability Scholarship

    Alameda Power & Telecom and the College of Alameda share related goals to sustainability, energy, energy-efficiency, workforce development, community development, curriculum development, and public relations. 

    With funds from Alameda Power
    & Telecom this $350 scholarship is intended for a student who has completed or is currently taking an Environmental Management Technology course.

    Eve St. Martin Wallenstein Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $2,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. Ms. Wallenstein began teaching at Merritt College (then called Oakland City College) in 1960, where she was a dynamic instructor of American Government, Comparative Government, and the French language until her retirement in 1988. She returned to Merritt College to teach classes in Political Science on a limited basis until 2002. Also, during her retirement, she served as a member of several faculty committees and led the in-service training for new faculty hires at Merritt College. Later, unable to maintain her teaching duties or committee work because of illness, Ms. Wallenstein assisted students in the Learning/Tutorial Center until 2006. Truly dedicated to her vocation as a teacher, Eve St. Martin Wallenstein was a mentor to her students and her colleagues in academia, as well as a loyal friend.

    Follett Bookstore Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded to one or more recipients at each Peralta Community College campus. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to applicants who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The applicant's financial need and scholastic record will be taken into consideration. The review committee may choose to focus on particular areas of study or other criteria in deciding awards.

    Georgia Runge-Smith Memorial Scholarship

    Named in memory of Georgia Runge-Smith, a graduate of the California Community College system, this scholarship is a tribute to her commitment to youth and education.

    This is a $250 scholarship offered in the Spring. This scholarship is open to all students at the Peralta Colleges(Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College) regardless of program or major. Qualified students need to have a 2.5 GPA or greater, demonstrate financial need, and must have a goal of transferring to a four-year institution for further study.

    Henry Fort Memorial Book Award

    This scholarship was established by the Peralta Colleges Alumni Association to honor Henry Fort's longtime contributions and dedication to the students of the Peralta Community College District. This award for $250 enables students with financial need to purchase textbooks. 

    Eligibility Requirements:
    1) Enrolled Credits/Units >= 6.00
    2) Received the California College Promise Grant (formally known as the Board of Governor's Waiver) 
     


    Information & Communication Technology Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended for students interested in Information & Communication Technology (ICT). ICT is among the fastest growing industries in California and is the key to finding solutions for virtually every challenge we face. 

    Four qualified students will each be awarded $250.00.

    International Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship. Applicants must be a F1 International student with at least one semester remaining at Peralta. Applicants must have a cumulitive GPA of 3.5 of higher, and must be in good academic standing. Applicants must attach a completed student education plan (SEP) showing their intent to earn an associates degree, complete a certificate program or transfer to a 4-yr university. Applicants must submit at least one letter of recommendation from a Peralta faculty person. (Not from the International office)

    Ivan J Houston Scholarship (NAAIA)

    This is a $1,250 scholarship awarded twice a year. The Ivan J. Houston Scholarship is so named in honor of a pioneering African American insurance professional who led the first Black-owned insurance company, Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, in California.

    Jim Coleman Memorial Scholarship

    To honor track & field coach, James (Jim) Coleman. Former McClymonds instructor and track & field coach at Laney College. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a female student in track & field.

    Kristiyana Scholarship Foundation

    This scholarship was created in loving memory of Laney College student Kristiyana, a scholarship established to celebrate her love of learning, creativity, resiliency, kindness, and compassion. CalWORKS recipients and EMT majors will be given special consideration. There are four $700 scholarships to be awarded in the Spring.

    Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary Club, Ann Estelle Richter Memorial Scholarship

    The purpose of these scholarships are to help deserving, but underserved Peralta Colleges Associate Degree Nursing (AND) students attain their nursing licenses, elevate the standard of living for them and their families and teach them about the joys and benefits of a lifetime of community service.Two scholarships of $4,500 each is intended for 2nd year nursing students pursuing an Associate Degree Program in Nursing(RN).

    Mardree Scott was former Child Development Department Chair at Merritt College.     Multimedia Community Service Award

    This scholarship is awarded to multiple Berkeley City College Multimedia Students who serve the multimedia community and support the success of their fellow students.

    Multimedia Emerging Filmmaker Award

    The Emerging Filmmaker prize is designed to provide seed money to enable students to complete creatively outstanding projects. This scholarship will be awarded to multiple Multimedia Arts students.

    • Filmmakers who are under-represented in the broader film community
    • Projects that have a clearly defined intention and path to completion/distribution

    Odell Johnson Scholarship

    The purpose of this scholarship is to support the academic and career journeys of highly motivated and deserving Laney College students. 

    This scholarship is meant to uplift the lives of those who are striving to make a difference in our community. This is a need-based scholarship. Students must show their increasingly progressive work towards completion of their Associate degree or certificate. Indication to progress to a Bachelor's degree is favorable, but not a requisite. Extra curriculum community work is also favorable. 
    Each scholarship award is $1,000 and there are 4 total awards available.

    Patti Heimburger AAUW College of Alameda Scholarship - Study Abroad

    This is a scholarship funded by the AAUW of Alameda in Memory of Patti Heimburger.
    This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a second year or later student whose home campus is the College of Alameda. The student should have completed at least 24 units with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. An Alameda resident is preferred and preference will be given to students completing the study abroad program in a developing country.

    There are two $1,500 scholarships awarded to fund a Study Abroad credit course offered by Peralta Community Colleges. This is a one-time award and cannot be combined with the Patti Heimburger transfer scholarship award in the same year.

    This is a $1,000 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to one student from each of the four Peralta Community Colleges. In addition, one of the four President's Medallion recipients will be selected as the Chancellor's Trophy Award recipient and will receive an additional $1500 award and their name on the Chancellor's Trophy that will be presented to the student at graduation. Applicants must apply at the College where the majority (51% or more) of his/her coursework has been completed at the time of application, and the majority (51% or more) of his/her activities (e.g., citizenship, leadership service, employment) have occurred. Employment during this period is given proper consideration.

    Richard Lewis McHugh Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year. Richard Lewis McHugh was a Navy veteran from the Vietnam War time frame. He served on the USS Hornet and performed avionics maintenance on helicopters and airplanes. Rick was later stationed in Japan and then returned to the San Francisco Bay Area (where he grew up) after four years in the Navy and lived in San Francisco during the height of the Haight-Ashbury days. After a devastating house fire that nearly took his life, he spent the later years living with the effects of the fire. Unfortunately, Rick contracted Hepatitis C, which eventually led to liver failure and claimed his life. Before becoming too ill to attend classes, Rick took several creative writing and art classes at the College of Alameda which gave him hope and encouragement. The Richard Lewis McHugh Memorial Scholarship Award is a special way his memory can live on while helping others.

    Sheryl Queen Memorial Scholarship

    The Sheryl Queen Memorial Fund is established by her family in memory of Sheryl Queen.  As a long-time Peralta employee, she often expressed her interest in the Day Care Center and her concern for the hardships single parents encountered in obtaining an education, especially in the current economic climate.  The scholarship is to be awarded once a year in two installments to one Laney student.  A 3.0 GPA must be maintained to receive the second installment of the scholarship.

    The Berrigan Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to help people in our community achieve the culinary goals in honor of Bridget Berrigan.

    The Arizmendi Bakery on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, CA is part of a broader Association of Cooperatives, founded in 1996. The Association develops democratically run businesses whose worker-owners are in control of their own livelihood. Arizmendi Lakeshore is committed to our Oakland community and wants to invest in the future culinary talent. Their membership will offer this $3,000 scholarship for the entire program to a Laney College Culinary Arts Program student who is dedicated to the culinary arts and Oakland.


    For the full-time student (12 credits/units or more) the awarded scholarship would be a maximum of $750 per semester up to but no more than four semesters. For a part-time student the scholarship award amount is $375. Automatic renewal is contingent upon the student maintaining a GPA of 2.5.

    The Phillippa Caldeira Award for Community Activism

    This scholarship is created in Phillippa D. Caldeira’s name to honor her contribution to the Laney College Community, to inspire students and faculty to follow her example of community service, dedication and academic excellence, and to continue the support that she provided for our students. 

    Phillippa D. Caldeira served as a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Laney College from 2012 to 2019. Phillippa received her bachelor’s degree in African-American Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Continuing her studies as a Spectrum Scholar, she earned a Masters in Library Science degree from San José State University, and became a dedicated educator and fierce advocate for student equity and accessibility at Laney. Students, staff, and faculty constantly sought out her guidance and her support.

     

    Having attended community college herself, Phillippa believed in our students’ abilities and worked tirelessly to help them achieve their academic goals. Her door was always open to students who needed extra help or to colleagues who sought her advice. Her desire to foster the learning of our students ranged from ensuring our facilities were designed with the needs of students as the priority to encouraging community activism. For Phillippa, being a librarian was more than a job: it was her mission to help support the learning, enlightenment, and success of all students.

    Vanson Nguyen Scholarship

    I have had the privilege of my undergraduate college paid for by parents who are war refugees. They have given time and money to charity which has inspired me to do similar work.

    This scholarship award is intended for a continuing College of Alameda student who has at least one remaining semester at COA. Preference will be given to those from a low Socio-Economic background as well as to those who volunteer and/or work in the community. Two students will be awarded $800.00 each for Spring of 2020.

    1) Campus is College of Alameda

    3) Transfer/Grad Peralta = No
    4) Credits/Units completed at Peralta >= 12.00


    Willa Graves Memorial Scholarship

    This is a $500 scholarship awarded once a year in the Spring to a single recipient. This scholarship is intended to be awarded to second semester or later Laney College Cosmetology students. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate financial need.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    2) Credits/Units Enrolled >=12.00
    3) Cumulative GPA >=3.00
    4) Majors and Programs is: COSM Cosmetology - AS or COSM Cosmetology - CA
